THE Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) has submitted a notice to police today on its plan to hold a rally demanding implementation of full reforms in front of parliament tomorrow.
The chairman of the NGO, Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz, said that they had delivered the notice at 1pm today at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
“Asraf Sharafi Mohd Azhar and I as representatives of Bersih have finalised the handing over the notice to the Dang Wangi police headquarters.
“The submission of this notice is in response to the Kuala Lumpur police chief’s statement regarding the issue of the notice under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2021,” he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.
He said Bersih extended its appreciation to police for their cooperation and assurance of security during the rally.
Yesterday, KL police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid had stated that the police had not received any notification regarding the organising of the public gathering with the social media hashtag #Reformasi100Peratus to demand “100 percent reform” from the government.
According to the organisers, the rally will begin at National Monument plaza near the parliament complex at 8am.
Police yesterday advised members of the public not to participate in the event as it did not comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act.
However, there has been no confirmation from police on whether the demonstration can go ahead since the notice was delivered.
Allaudeen had pointed to a promotional poster on the event, saying that the organisers were inviting people to gather at the National Monument and march to the parliament building to urge the government to implement the reform agenda.
“Holding an assembly without notification is an offence under Section 9 (5) of the relevant act and police are calling on the public not to participate in the illegal assembly,” he had said then, warning of strict action against those who violate the law. – The Vibes, February 26, 2024.
