MCMC summons MyNewsHub’s social media operator over civil servants video

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has called up the operator of MyNewsHub news portal’s social media account over an old video clip, which has allegedly created confusion on social media.

In a statement, the MCMC expressed grave concern over the spread of a one-minute and 10-second video titled “Tanya pasal kuarters jer dh kene mcm tu depan KSN!!”, which is perceived as aiming to portray civil servants negatively.

“According to a Public Service Department (PSD) statement, the video depicts a simulation of security personnel’s readiness in response to a provocative attack scenario,” the statement said.

The MCMC said the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which deals with abuse of network facilities.

It carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both, upon conviction.

The agency warned against misusing online services to disseminate fake content.

In a statement, JPA clarified yesterday that the video is a “simulation scenario” meant to test the preparedness of security personnel in facing provocative attack situations.

“JPA views any attempt to undermine the civil service with seriousness, as it portrays the government as negligent towards the concerns and well-being of civil servants,” it said. – April 13, 2024.
