TWO youths drowned after being trapped in a water surge at a waterfall at the Sematan nature reserve in southern Sarawak.

The incident happened at Kpg Sebat Dayak yesterday evening at about 5pm.

The body of Steven Chai, aged 20, was found around 11am today.

The body of Vincent Tiong, also aged 20, was found late yesterday.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department today said the bodies of the victims were recovered from among branches of sunken trees at the waterfall site.

Two other youths, both also aged 20, were rescued by members of the public yesterday shortly after the incident happened.

The site of the waterfall is located about 31km from the nearest town of Lundu.

The department said a search and rescue operation was launched yesterday evening after the Lundu Bomba station received an emergency alert.

The four youths were friends who had gone to the site for an outing yesterday. – The Vibes, April 13, 2024.
