SABAH authorities yesterday uncovered a refrigerated container in which chicken with the halal label was stored together with pork.
State Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry Director Georgie Abas said the items were discovered in a joint inspection exercise carried out by the General Operation Forces and Sabah Veterinary Department.
“A joint inspection on an unnamed storage facility on Jalan Burung Keleto Inanam found a refrigerated container with frozen chicken with a halal logo on the boxes, stored together with pork.
“The refrigerated container was sent to the ministry for further investigation,” he said.
Abas said the container held 847 boxes of frozen chicken with a halal logo, estimated to be worth more than RM120,000.
“A local man said to be the owner of the premises was questioned to assist in the investigation," he said.
“The pork was seized by the Sabah Veterinary Services Department for further action."
The case is being investigated under Order 3(1)(g) of the Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011 regulating the storage of halal items.
Misuse of the halal label is punishable by a RM5 million fine or three years in jail. – 22 May 2024
