THE Sungai Bakap by-election in Penang will be held on July 6, the Election Commission announced today.

Nomination is on June 22 and early polling, July 2.

The state seat fell vacant following the death of assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff of PAS/Perikatan Nasional on May 14.

The latest voter registration showed there are 39,279 voters in the constituency, 39,222 of whom are regular voters and 57 are police personnel.

In the election last August, Malays made up 59.36% of the voters, Chinese (22.54%), Indians (17.39%), and other ethnicities (0.71%).

Both PAS and PKR have indicated this readiness to run again for the state seat.

The results of the by-election will not effect the majority status of the Pakatan Harapan-led state government. – June 6, 2024.
