RESIDENTS of the Seri Alam low-cost flats (PPR) in Kuala Lumpur have urged the government to allow them to purchase the homes that they are currently renting.
They said after paying rent for more than 10 years, they should be able to buy the flats so that they will have a permanent home for their families.
Seri Alam Phase 2 residents association president Hisham Ghazali said they have been pleading with the authorities for years to allow them to buy the flats.
“We want Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to gazette the flats as houses for sale,” the 56-year-old told The Vibes.
He said they have written more than 10 letters to former prime ministers, former Federal Territories ministers, three previous DBKL mayors, including the housing and local government ministers, but to no avail.
Seri Alam Phase 2 has about 920 units housing 3,800 people, of which 65% are Malays, 18% Indians and 17% Chinese.
He said in other areas, DBKL has sold their flats to the residents.
“We are hoping that the government can immediately help us buy the homes.
“The residents here want their own homes and do not have to keep paying rent.
“We hope to buy the homes at an appropriate price. We are looking to pay RM32,500 for a unit.”
He said that the built-up space of the flat is 660 sq ft with a monthly rental of RM124.
When asked if the residents can afford to buy the flats, Hisham said that he has got the signatures of 95% of the residents who want to buy the flats.
He said they will send a letter next week to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim seeking his help.
“Anwar is definitely a leader who is always helping the people. Our plea is that we hope the government will not only help us but also all those residents in PPR (around Kuala Lumpur).” – June 25, 2024.
