LUTH Syauqi Nur Sufyan, who fell unconscious after eating keropok (crackers) believed to be laced with rat poison died today.
His two-year-old brother Akil Syauqi, 3. who also ate the crackers, died on Wednesday at Penang Hospital.
Their mother, Nurain Hasnorizal, confirmed the younger brother’s death.
“Luth passed away at about 1.24pm today. His suffering has come to an end,” she was quoted by Malay-language tabloid Harian Metro as saying.
She said Luth will be buried beside his brother at Kampung Banggol Berangan in Labu Besar, Kedah.
"Although it is sad and difficult to deal with Luth’s death, I have to accept it as fate.
"Let him be with his brother. They are finally together again,” she said.
Yesterday, it was reported that a man had been remanded for six days to assist in an investigation into the poisoning of the two brothers.
It was earlier reported that the crackers were found in a packet hanging from a garden fence near their home.
Kulim police chief Mohd Azizul said the boys’ 25-year-old mother saw her sons vomiting before rushing them to the Malau Health Clinic and then to Kulim Hospital.
An investigation revealed that the two brothers had eaten crackers containing poison that was meant for monkeys. The packets of poisoned crackers were hanging from a wire on a fence in a garden near their home.
“Medical officers at Kulim Hospital found that both victims were in critical condition. At 7.30pm, both were taken to Penang General Hospital for further treatment,” said Azizul.
The suspect in the case is believed to be the boys’ neighbour, who works as a gardener.
“The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children’s Act 2001 (Act 611) and Section 284 of the Penal Code (for negligent conduct for poisonous substances),” he said.
