KUALA LUMPUR – Sarong Day 2020, held on Wednesday in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations, “helps boost my patriotism”, said participant Siti Aishah Mohd Mad Rahim.
Apart from strengthening unity among the people, the 19-year-old Universiti Teknologi Mara student said the programme also ensures the traditional sarong is not forgotten by the younger generation.
“It makes me feel patriotic to see participants of all races clad in sarong.
“This programme can preserve our tradition and culture.”
The programme was held at iconic locations in the capital, including Dataran Merdeka, as well as several hotels nationwide.
Bala, a participant in his 50s, described Sarong Day as unique and interesting.
“The sarong is a symbol of unity among Malaysians of various races. To me, it is very beautiful.”
This year’s event replaced the Keretapi Sarong flash mob held on Malaysia Day since 2017, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. – Bernama, September 19, 2020
