PAKATAN Harapan has allowed its Sarawak chapter to go all out in the fight against Gabungan Parti Sarawak in the state elections due in 2026.

Sources told The Vibes that the PH national leaders will leave the campaign fully in the hands of the Sarawak chapters of PKR, DAP, and Amanah.

"The state elections will see Sarawak PH as the opposition, while PH will maintain its federal ties with GPS in Putrajaya,” said a source.

"It is going to be a very interesting situation. It may become complicated too.”

Sarawak PH chairman Chong Chien Jen is also the leader of the Sarawak chapter of DAP.

PKR has set up an elections committee to prepare for the state polls.

State PKR information chief Tay Wei Wei said the party is preparing early for the elections to get the machinery going as soon as possible.

"Our 31 PKR branches in Sarawak are now in preparation mode for the state elections. We have called 400 branch leaders for a state-level meeting," Tay said, adding that the election committee has members from the urban and rural districts.

He said the committee will also prepare for the next general elections, which will feature contests for parliamentary seats in Sarawak.

Sarawak PKR chairman Roland Engan had said the people of Sarawak needed an alternative voice.

"Sarawak PKR will give them that voice. In Sarawak, the need for such an alternative voice is especially crucial," he had said.

The state is due to hold elections in 2026, but politicians are already ramping up their publicity campaigns in anticipation of early polls.

GPS holds 79 of the 82 seats in the state assembly, Sarawak DAP two, and an Independent one. – August 16, 2024.
