AFTER nearly 17 hours of searching, rescuers have found only a pair of slippers belonging to the Indian tourist who fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur.

The slippers were reported to have been discovered floating in the excavated area on the morning of the incident.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the scuba team are searching 100% of the area where the woman had fallen.

The search and rescue operation halted at 12.30am due to heavy rain and resumed at 9am.

He added that the rescue team faced various risks, including strong currents, gas, and sewage.

"We will tighten controls at the location, and the public is reminded to reduce movement and exercise caution," he added.

Meanwhile, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) announced that it is opening manholes along the 7km sewerage line between Masjid India and Pantai Dalam in an effort to find the victim.

IWK chief executive officer Narendran Maniam said each manhole along the sewerage line will be searched..

"It's possible that the victim got stuck in an inter pump station," he said, noting that a human body could be washed away along the 1.5m-wide sewer pipe with a 3m diameter.

The victim, identified as Vijayaletchumy, 48, from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, was walking with her family in front of the Malayan Mansion on Jalan Masjid India when she fell into a sinkhole that had suddenly opened beneath her at 8.20am on Thursday. – August 24, 2024.
