PEOPLE living in flood-prone areas in Sarawak are suffering badly due to the worsening floods, Progressive Democratic Party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said.
Tiong, who is also the federal tourism minister, Bintulu MP, and state assemblyman for Dudong, took to social media to express his sympathy for those who have to endure the floods so frequently.
He personally visited the flooded areas in Sibu to witness the misery caused by the ongoing floods.
"I visited several flooded areas in the Salim-Sibu residential zones. The situation is indeed very bad, with floodwaters reaching up to my chest – and I am 170cm tall! Imagine those who have to live like this and endure such suffering each time it rains heavily. I also heard of people in rural areas being trapped for hours during heavy rain," Tiong said.
He stated that the Drainage and Irrigation Department must take urgent action, focusing on specific zones to resolve these flood problems.
Tiong mentioned that the recent floods in Sibu were the worst he could recall. "I have already contacted the Drainage and Irrigation Department and told them they must identify the problematic areas and start mitigation projects immediately," he said.
Yesterday, the floods spread across the central Sarawak region, with numerous populated settlements submerged under five feet of water. – August 26, 2024.
