KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has scrapped its Merdeka eve celebration, which was scheduled to take place at Dataran Merdeka tomorrow.

It said the events were cancelled out of respect for the victims of sinkholes that have appeared in the city.

DBKL encouraged the public show patriotism to mark Merdeka.

Indian tourist Vijayaletchumy, 48, fell into the sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India last Friday. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

In a separate statement last night, DBKL said the fire and rescue team had entered the sewerage channel upstream from the tunnel at Wisma Yakin, while manual shoring and excavation works had also been carried out.

The search, using ground-penetrating radar and conducted by the Minerals and Geosciences Department, will continue. – August 29, 2024.
