A 17-YEAR-OLD girl was rescued by the public after she was spotted jumping into a river in Sungai Merah town in Sibu district this morning.

The girl was seen jumping off the bridge about 9.30am but several passers-by jumped into the river and saved her.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said several people in a nearby market saw her jumping off the bridge.

"They used long poles to prevent her from sinking before they dragged her on to the river bank.

"She did not suffer any physical injuries," a Fire Department spokesman said.

Police took custody of the teenager and sent her to a hospital.

Police are investigating the reasons for her jumping off the bridge. - September 17, 2024
