IT is unacceptable for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government to refuse to raise the minimum pay of Sarawak civil service employees.

This, especially when the GPS keeps boosting, earning record revenues for Sarawak year after year, said state DAP chairman Chong Chien Jen.

The Padungan state assemblyman said the decision by the GPS not to raise the minimum monthly salary of civil servants in Sarawak from RM 1,500 to RM 1,700 is clear evidence that the wealth of the state government is not being shared justly with the rakyat.

"I have done some calculations and found that if the state government raises the minimum pay of state civil service employees to RM 1,700 per month, it will incur an additional RM 1 billion at the most every year.

"Surely the GPS state government can afford this sum. After all, GPS claims it brings in record-breaking revenues of multi-billions every year.

"GPS should increase the pay of all civil servants working in Sarawak by at least 10 per cent because it earns record revenues every year," he said at the State Assembly debate session.

Chong is also Sarawak Pakatan Harapan chairman.

He urged the GPS to immediately reconsider its decision not to raise the minimum pay for state civil servants.

He pointed out that the state government is spending billions to finance mega-projects that do not benefit the majority of the rakyat. - November 14, 2024
