STUDENTS from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pedai primary school in the Kanowit district in central Sarawak were evacuated after they were trapped by flash floods this morning.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said the school and the surrounding road were flooded up to a metre.

"We received an emergency alert that the students at the boarding quarters could not get out as they were caught in the flash floods during heavy rain.

"Our rescue unit in Bomba Kanowit was deployed to the site.

"The students were evacuated and led out of the floods wearing life jackets," the department said in a press update.

This is the second time in a week that students were caught by sudden floods as the landas season lashes various parts of this state.

On Dec 13, dozens of students and teachers in Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Budu in Saratok district in southern Sarawak were evacuated by rescue personnel after the school was inundated in a metre of floods.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said the students and teachers were safely evacuated and sent home. - December 20, 2024
