THE number of flood evacuees in Sabah has risen to 5,617 from 4,990 in the past eight hours, as heavy rains continue to force more residents into relief centres.
The Civil Defence Force reported that as of 8 am today, 39 temporary relief centres (PPS) have been opened to accommodate the evacuees, up from 35 recorded at midnight.
Kota Marudu remains the hardest hit, with evacuees increasing to 2,944 from 2,864. Pitas saw the sharpest rise, with numbers nearly doubling from 379 to 768. Meanwhile, figures in Lahad Datu (443) and Telupid (413) have remained unchanged.
Authorities warn that floodwaters are still rising, and more residents may be forced to evacuate if the rain persists. The Civil Defence Force is coordinating ongoing relief efforts, ensuring displaced residents receive food, medical aid, and temporary shelter.
With road access to some areas still cut off, rescue teams are working around the clock to assist those stranded. The Meteorological Department has advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations. - January 31, 2025
