ALL sympathy and humanitarian values aside, several individuals were accused of taking jewellery belonging to a woman believed to have died in the Nepal flood disaster.
The act went viral after a video uploaded by Threads user @Nyarikisport showed several individuals in an area filled with mud, wood and piles of debris carried by the rapid flow of flash floods.
The footage shows two men using a bamboo stick as they approach the woman's body before one of them is seen holding the victim's head.
More surprisingly, the action was allegedly not to remove the body, but rather they were believed to be trying to get the victim's jewellery.
"The floods in Nepal claimed many lives, but what surprised me was that some were looking for gold from the victims who died. Where has humanity gone?" he asked.
The video drew the anger of social media users who described the act of taking valuables from disaster victims as inhumane.
A user, @Iamnobody0017, claimed that the individual involved pulled the victim's hair just to get the jewellery she was wearing.
"He pulled the victim's hair so he could take the earrings, not to get the poor woman out of the area. This act is really disturbing and sad," he said.
Meanwhile, @Ann_anya21 described the act as heartless because the deceased victim should be given due respect.
"They stole earrings from the body of a woman who was in a flooded area in Nepal. At first I thought they wanted to save the victim, but instead they took her things. Don't they have humanity?"
Meanwhile, @Estellejournal said that jewellery or items still on the victim's body can help the identification process if the identity cannot be determined.
"What is still on the victim's body can be a clue to identify the identity if the body is difficult to identify. The act of taking things also seems to usurp the rights of the victim's family," he said. – August 27, 2026
