A WARNING has been issued of a possible king tide measuring 6.1 metres high that may sweep through rivers and waterways in Sarawak this evening.
This adds to the bad flood woes as the number of people evacuated from flooded homes statewide surpasses the 10,000 mark.
The State Disaster Management Committee said this morning the number of flood victims in about 60 evacuation shelters had reached 9,790 people.
Meanwhile, the State Drainage and Irrigation Department has issued a red alert on the 6.1 metres-high king tide, said Kuching City South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
"If it comes amidst heavy rain, the floods could be even worse.
"People living near rivers and those in low-lying areas must be prepared," he said in Kuching.
Wee said residents must cooperate if an evacuation order was deemed a necessity in those zones seeing very high floodwaters.
Entire towns and villages are being inundated by more than a metre of floods, such as in Bekenu town in northern Sarawak.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, the State Civil Defence, the army, district offices, the Welfare Department and other departments and agencies are now out in full force to help victims in flooded zones. - January 31, 2025
