THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation into six individuals suspected of uploading fake and offensive content on the social media platform Facebook.
In a statement, MCMC said the content in question involves His Majesty King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim and the Conference of Rulers.
MCMC said a raid was conducted today on one of the suspects in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, who are believed to have shared false content regarding a meeting of the Conference of Rulers.
During the raid, authorities seized one smartphone and one SIM card, which will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Forensic analysis will be carried out on the devices to obtain crucial evidence.
In addition, the investigation will involve the Police's Elite Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT). The suspect in question will be interrogated on 12 February 2025, with the cooperation of USJT officers.
Further raids targeting additional suspects will take place throughout the week, at various locations including Sungai Petani, Kota Bharu, Kerian, and Teluk Intan.
Earlier, MCMC had issued two notices to two suspects, requesting them to provide statements regarding the offensive content they posted on Facebook.
The investigation will be comprehensive, and once completed, the case will be forwarded to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for further action.
This investigation is being carried out under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which stipulates penalties of up to RM50,000 in fines, one year in prison, or both.
Authorities have issued a strong reminder to the public to avoid using online platforms to disseminate false or misleading information, which can result in serious consequences, including causing public panic and distress. People are urged to be cautious of manipulated content and to verify facts by cross-checking information with trusted sources before sharing.
