THE Malaysian government has announced plans to review and reassess the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), following a directive issued by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at today’s Cabinet meeting.

Fahmi Fadzil, who is the spokesperson for the unity government, revealed that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will present the findings of this review to Parliament next week.

“The Cabinet, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has decided that Sosma will undergo a thorough review and reassessment. With God's will, the Home Minister will present the proposed changes and updates in Parliament next week,” Fahmi stated during his regular post-Cabinet briefing.

He further explained that several aspects of the controversial legislation had already been discussed and consensus reached on areas that require improvement or additional scrutiny.

“The review is seen as an important step in refining the law to ensure it balances national security with fundamental civil liberties,” at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing today. - February 14, 2025
