A CHILD is reported to be in critical condition at the Penang Hospital (HPP) after allegedly choking on an eye shaped gummy candy, reported Berita Harian.

Mohamad Fahmi Hafiz Mohamad Fakhruddin, 10, is said to have collapsed in the Al-Quran and Fardhu 'Ain (KAFA) class in Sungai Dua, Butterworth at around 2:30 pm yesterday.

His aunt, Siti Farhani Mohamad Fikri, 33, said that around 10 am today, the doctor informed that Mohamad Fahmi still showed no signs of improvement.

The doctor said that if he does not show any response by this Friday, all medication will be stopped.

"We surrender everything to Allah  and leave the treatment matters to the hospital," she said when contacted by Berita Harian today.

The victim is being treated in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

Earlier, Siti Farhani's post on Facebook requesting prayers from the public regarding her nephew's condition garnered attention and shares from the online community.

Through the post, Siti Farhani informed that Mohamad Fahmi is in critical condition and has not regained consciousness after allegedly choking on the candy at school.

The candy in question is said to have been purchased at a stall outside the school area.

He said the teacher informed that Mohamad Fahmi choked before going to the bathroom.

When walking to the toilet, the child fell and lost consciousness before the teacher called an ambulance.

The teacher made a video call with the medical team who asked him to check Mohamad Fahmi's mouth before finding the candy lodged in the child's throat.

"When we received Mohamad Fahmi's clothes from the hospital, we found another piece of candy in the pocket of his shirt," he said.

Mohamad Fahmi's parents, Nuraini Mat Isa, 37, and Mohamad Fakhruddin Fikri, 35, declined to comment on the incident. - February 19, 2025
