THE state government and several private investors are planning to construct two medical-tourism resorts in southern Sarawak.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg today said the two sites identified are Damai resort in Santubong district and Telok Melano resort in Sematan district.

Santubong is about 30kms from state capital Kuching while Sematan is about 100kms from Kuching.

"There is tremendous potential to develop medical-tourism in Kuching and there will be three more private specialists hospitals coming up.

"We expect to see surge in the number of tourists from neighbouring countries coming to Kuching for health and medical visits.

"There is already an increase in medical-tourists from Indonesia and there is a need to build holiday resorts so they can stay and recuperate," said Johari when attending a health event in Kuching.

The medical-tourism resorts will be managed by private investors and the land will be allotted by the state government, he said.

Public amenities at these sites, as well as public transportation facilities will be handled by the government ministries, he added. – February 24, 2025
