THE official handover of Bintulu Port from the Federal to the Sarawak Government will strengthen the state's position as the country's strategic maritime and industrial hub.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move was not just a transfer of administration, but rather a new chapter in Sarawak's efforts to manage its own strategic assets that are the heart of the country's energy, trade and logistics sectors.
"Bintulu has been recognised by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as a Transitioning Industry Cluster (TIC).
"This recognition, as well as our strength in clean energy and low-carbon development, enables us to elevate Malaysia as one of the sustainable areas in the development of an industrial and energy-based economy in the future," he said.
He said this when speaking at the cheque handover ceremony for the change of status of Bintulu Port from Federal Port to State Port held in Bintulu today.
The development of Bintulu Port has a long history as a result of close cooperation between the Federal Government and Sarawak since the beginning of its construction to support the country's liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.
The Sarawak Premier also expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Federal Government for reaching an agreement in principle on the acquisition of Bintulu Port, including the payment method agreed upon by both parties.
The state government also plans to consolidate all state ports under the Sarawak Port Authority to streamline governance and the implementation of the Sarawak Port Master Plan. – June 21, 2026
