MALAYSIA'S newly appointed Ambassador to the United States is a seasoned diplomat with a wealth of experience in international relations and negotiations, according to Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Foreign Minister said the choice of the Ambassador was crucial due to the importance of Malaysia-US bilateral ties, particularly in trade and economic cooperation.

He noted that the current political climate in the US, under President Donald Trump’s administration, along with Malaysia's role in hosting the upcoming ASEAN-US Summit in 2025, played a pivotal role in selecting the right candidate.

"Given these factors, we cannot afford to take this appointment lightly and simply appoint anyone," Mohamad said during a 'Santai Teh Tarik' session at the Concorde Club.

The Foreign Minister also revealed that the selected nominee has already received approval from the United States, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now seeking the consent of Malaysia's King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, to finalize the appointment.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously confirmed that a candidate had been chosen to succeed Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, whose two-year tenure as Malaysia's Ambassador to the US concluded earlier this month.
