PENANG DAP vice-chairman Yeoh Soon Hin is standing on his own merits and strengths and not depend on prominent party leaders to help him canvass for votes in the upcoming DAP's central executive committee elections (CEC) on March 16.
Yeoh, a former three-term Paya Terubong assemblyman and state executive councillor, insisted that he is no proxy to incumbent DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng or Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Instead, he is determined to stand 'solo' in the election despite pundits predicting that he will not qualify since there are 70 candidates seeking 30 elected CEC slots.
Yeoh, who is the Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman and Tourism Malaysia board deputy chairman, said that the election of office bearers is a democratic process.
"Each member must be treated equally and fairly based on the party constitution. Each leader or member can be nominated, elected and supported."
Yeoh, who joined DAP 20 - years ago, said that he hopes to serve and contribute to the party at the national level after earning experience in Penang.
"I bring renewal, new viewpoints, fresh ideas and new solutions to the party."
For Penang DAP, Yeoh said that he can offer the party's policies and national leadership mindset if he is elected as a CEC member.
Yesterday, party national organising secretary Steven Sim said 70 candidates will vie for 30 DAP CEC in party polls on March 16.
According to the candidate list that Sim released, most CEC members will be seeking re-election.
"A total 4,203 delegates from 1,650 branches will participate in the polls which is part of DAP's 18th National Congress.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would attend the congress," he told a press conference.
He said the CEC election will be conducted and monitored by an independent third party. - March 4, 2025
