MALAYSIA is committed to reinforcing its semiconductor supply chain in collaboration with other ASEAN member countries as part of its leadership role in ASEAN this year, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Liew Chin Tong tells the Dewan Negara today.
In a recent statement during the Dewan Negara Question and Answer session, Liew said Malaysia does not aim to compete with its ASEAN neighbours in the semiconductor sector but instead seeks to work together to strengthen the regional supply chain.
"Many believe Malaysia is in competition with Vietnam and other neighbouring countries. However, the ASEAN spirit teaches us that we should not view our neighbours or ASEAN partners as rivals,” Liew remarked.
Liew’s comments came in response to Senator Kesavadas Achyuthan Nair’s question about Malaysia’s approach to ensuring equitable economic growth within ASEAN and its strategies as the 2025 ASEAN chair amidst global trade challenges.
He went on to highlight the critical roles played by Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore in the global semiconductor industry and the importance of their collaboration to address ongoing global challenges.
“We aim to bolster the supply chain so that, in the event of disruptions or global crises, we can address them together,” he stated.
Furthermore, Liew noted that the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is nearing the completion of the AEC Strategic Plan for 2026-2030, which is set for launch in May during the 46th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.
“This plan will be unveiled alongside the ASEAN Community Vision 2045,” he added.
"As Malaysia takes on the 2025 ASEAN chairmanship, it is crucial for us to play a proactive and forward-thinking role in advancing the ASEAN agenda and realising the goals set out in the AEC Strategic Plan." - March 12, 2025
