SARAWAK is set to acquire new ATR 72-600 aircraft to enhance its rural air services (RAS) operations, according to the State's Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

The new aircraft will replace the current fleet once their lease agreements come to an end in two years.

“The replacement will occur after the lease period expires, as the existing aircraft are still under lease. However, arrangements have already been made to acquire new ATR 72-600 models,” Lee explained at a press conference today.

Regarding the current fleet of Twin Otter aircraft, Lee confirmed that they are still in relatively new condition, so no decision has been made yet to replace them.

He added Sarawak’s state-owned airline, AirBorneo, will continue to operate the rural air services previously managed by MASwings Sdn Bhd. Additionally, as AirBorneo expands its services in the region, further aircraft acquisitions are expected.

In another development, Lee addressed the anticipated demand for flights between Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak during the upcoming Aidilfitri celebrations, ensuring that adequate flight availability will be provided for those returning home.

“We want to make sure there are enough flights for everyone to return home for Hari Raya. We will coordinate with airlines to offer additional flights,” he said.

Lee also shared that the state’s Road Safety Council will be launching the 2025 Hari Raya Road Safety Campaign in Mukah on March 17. The initiative aims to promote safe driving practices ahead of the holiday season.

“We will be distributing special edition ‘Sampul Duit Raya’ (green packets) as part of the campaign, which features festive elements and essential road safety messages on the back,” he added. - March 12, 2025
