A HUSBAND and wife tragically lost their lives in an accident on the North-South Expressway near Yong Peng in Batu Pahat early yesterday morning.

The couple, travelling in a car, were involved in a collision with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) at around 6:30 am.

Batu Pahat district police chief, ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani, confirmed in a statement today that the victims were identified as Mohamad Shahrul Nizam Mohd Ali, 24, and Norsuhada Kartika Razak, 23. Both were pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.

"The accident is believed to have occurred when the car lost control, crashing into the metal guardrail. The vehicle then spun before coming to a stop across the road," ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat said.

"Unable to avoid the collision, an SUV behind the car crashed into the vehicle," he added.

The couple, residents of Kota Tinggi, were confirmed dead on the spot, while the 50-year-old driver of the SUV, who sustained chest injuries, was rushed to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar for treatment.

The police chief confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. – March 16, 2025
