A DEPARTMENT of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) officer and an elderly woman were injured after allegedly being attacked by an elephant in Kampung Laloh, Kuala Krai, yesterday.
Nazri Mat Husin, 46, the son of the elderly woman, Zainab Mat Husin, 62, shared that he was informed of the incident around 11am when his aunt, Fatimah Mat Husin, called him.
"My mother was tapping rubber near our house when she was believed to have been attacked by the elephant. She was later found lying in the plantation," Nazri said, speaking to Bernama today.
Zainab has since undergone surgery and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital in Kuala Krai for further monitoring.
Meanwhile, Azmi Muhammad, 45, the head of Kampung Laloh, reported that a team of Perhilitan officers quickly responded to the scene after receiving reports from local residents.
"The Perhilitan team entered the forest to track down the elephant and did not allow villagers to join them due to safety concerns.
“Shortly after, we were informed that one of the Perhilitan officers had also been injured in an elephant attack," he said, adding that the officer was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Azmi urged villagers living near the affected area to remain cautious and refrain from outdoor activities for the time being to prevent any further incidents.
"For now, I advise the villagers to postpone any activities in the area. I will also discuss further steps with the community and stay in contact with the police," he said.
In a separate statement, the District Police Chief of Kuala Krai, Supt. Mazlan Mamat, informed that the police had not yet received an official report on the incident.
"The matter has been reported to Perhilitan, and they are taking action. However, no formal police report has been filed yet. We are assisting by alerting the residents to stay indoors and avoid roaming outside," he said. - March 21, 2025
