TAILING closely behind the vehicle in front has been identified as the main cause of accidents recorded during the festive season in 2024.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said based on a study on the number of accidents recorded during that period, another factor is the lack of awareness and concern for others.

He said the third factor is due to drivers not noticing other vehicles or objects in front or beside their vehicle.

"Other factors that contribute significantly to accidents are careless attitudes when entering or exiting intersections, attempting to overtake vehicles dangerously, or recklessly changing lanes.

"Besides their attitude, technical factors of the vehicle and the road's topography also contribute to drivers' failure to control their vehicles, leading to accidents," he said.

He said this after launching Op Selamat 24 in conjunction with the 2025 Aidilfitri celebrations.

Op Selamat 24 will run from March 29 to April 3, while Op Lancar will be from March 23 to April 6.

Mohd Yusri said that a total of 6,957 personnel will be on duty during Op Selamat.

According to him, his team has detected 25 hotspots and 46 blackspots on najor highways.

He said, continuous monitoring will be conducted to help road users in case they encounter vehicle breakdowns or emergencies that require immediate attention.

He stressed that action will be taken against road users who do not follow traffic rules.

He said, there were a total 407 hotspots and 76 blackspots throughout the country involving federal, state, municipal and other roads.

He added that with the efforts and cooperation of various agencies and departments within the PDRM, Op Selamat is a proactive step in reducing accidents and instilling confidence among road users. – March 24, 2025
