A VIETNAMESE woman is to be charged tomorrow in a high profile hit and run case that claimed the life of a Form Six student from a renowned school in Penang last month.

Another student was also injured in the incident near SMK Heng Eee.

George Town district police chief Razlam Abdul Hamid said the suspect would face two charges at the George Town magistrates’ court under the Road Transport Act 1987, which include driving under the influence.

It was previously reported that the accident occurred on Feb 19.

The 18-year-old was walking home after a meal with two friends when they were struck by the foreigner’s car.

The driver then fled from the scene.

The family of the deceased had earlier accused the authorities of been late in prosecuting the driver, saying that justice delayed is injustice to them.

Meanwhile, Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said about 2.6 million vehicles are expected to enter Penang during the Hari Raya festive celebrations.

He said the relevant authorities were ramping up traffic control efforts.

A total of 331 traffic police officers will be deployed to monitor the roads and enforce regulations under Ops Selamat. - March 26, 2025.
