THERE have been no reports of Malaysian citizens being involved in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar yesterday, according to Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
At present, there is no evidence to suggest any Malaysians were affected by the earthquake, which impacted both Myanmar and neighbouring regions.
However, the ministry is continuing to monitor the situation closely and is in regular contact with the Malaysian embassy to ensure the safety of citizens in the area.
“We will continue to provide assistance and support to any Malaysians in need, but so far, there have been no reports indicating that they were affected by the earthquake,” Mohamad Hasan confirmed in a statement.
The earthquake struck in the north-western region of Myanmar, while many Malaysians are based in the country's largest city, Yangon.
Despite the geographical distance from the epicentre, the government is advising citizens in Myanmar and Thailand to register with their respective embassies through the E-Konsular Malaysian Citizen Registration System or by directly contacting the nearest embassy.
“This is necessary to ensure their safety can be monitored and to facilitate efforts by authorities to locate and provide assistance quickly if needed,” he added.
In response to the disaster, Malaysia has confirmed that it will be sending a humanitarian and disaster management team to Myanmar. The team, led by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), will be heading to Yangon to assess the situation and deliver aid.
The Foreign Ministry has stated that the team, consisting of 40 members, is scheduled to depart tomorrow morning. Their mission will focus on the areas identified as high-priority in an initial assessment, ensuring that Malaysia’s assistance is both targeted and responsive to the current needs of the region. – March 29, 2025
