THREE men suspected of involvement in a violent machete attack at a shopping mall in Seremban have been arrested by police less than 24 hours after the incident.
Seremban District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din, confirmed that the suspects, aged between 35 and 47, were apprehended around 5pm yesterday in the Port Dickson area.
“We successfully arrested all three suspects within 24 hours and seized a machete believed to have been used during the attack,” he said in a statement today.
He added that background checks revealed the suspects had prior criminal records, including offences related to violence, robbery, and even murder, as well as drug-related crimes.
The suspects were remanded for three days following a magistrate court order granted earlier today, as investigations continue.
The case, initially classified under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, has been reclassified under Section 326 after medical examinations confirmed the victim sustained serious injuries.
The assault took place around 7pm inside a shopping mall and was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV). The footage has since gone viral on social media, showing a man casually attacking another with a machete in full view of the public.
According to police, the attack appears to be linked to gang-related revenge.
“We received a report of a machete attack involving a 40-year-old male victim at approximately 8.15pm, and the footage rapidly spread across social media platforms,” said Mohamad Hatta.
Investigations revealed that the incident occurred while the victim was sitting alone and smoking in the mall when a group of men suddenly appeared, running up from the lower floor via the escalator. One of the men was wielding a machete.
“The victim was caught off guard and struck repeatedly by the attacker. Despite his injuries, he managed to get up and escape, reportedly aided by a friend who witnessed the incident,” said Hatta.
The victim, who sustained multiple lacerations to both arms, his back, and right leg, was rushed to hospital for treatment. He is currently in stable condition.
Authorities believe the incident was premeditated and linked to a personal grudge, warning that elements of gangsterism may have played a role.
As investigations progress, police are urging the public not to speculate and to allow due process to take its course. – April 16, 2025
