MORE than 3.9 million Malaysians have begun using their MyKad to purchase essential goods under the expanded Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) scheme, according to the Ministry of Finance.
In a statement released today, the ministry said the figure represents 72 per cent of the 5.4 million eligible recipients who received SARA credits beginning in April 2025. The number of beneficiaries has seen a significant increase this year, up from just 700,000 in 2024.
The aid, which can be redeemed at over 3,700 participating retail outlets and supermarkets nationwide, is aimed at reducing the cost of living by providing monthly credits for the purchase of basic necessities.
“The MADANI Government listens to the people to ensure their livelihoods are safeguarded,” said Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. “The expansion of eligible goods under the SARA scheme is a direct result of feedback from recipients. The government acted swiftly to implement this.”
As of 1 May 2025, the list of approved items under SARA has been expanded to include household cleaning products such as laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, and floor cleaners. This brings the total number of eligible product categories to 14, covering a wide range of basic food items, personal hygiene products, over-the-counter medicines, and school supplies.
“The MADANI Government will continue improving the implementation of the SARA programme from time to time, Insya-Allah,” Anwar added.
The Ministry of Finance also reported that the highest rate of SARA usage through MyKad was recorded in Sabah (84 per cent), followed by Perlis (82 per cent), Kedah (80 per cent), the Federal Territory of Labuan (79 per cent), and Kelantan (78 per cent).
Under the updated scheme, recipients may receive up to RM2,100 in 2025, a 75 per cent increase from the RM1,200 maximum provided in 2024. SARA credits are valid throughout the year, with unused monthly balances carried forward until 31 December 2025.
The government has also significantly expanded access to participating shops. Compared to only 700 outlets in 2024, the number has now grown more than fivefold to ensure better nationwide coverage, especially in rural and remote areas. - May 1, 2025
