PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said he is optimistic that relations with Singapore will continue to deepen under the leadership of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, following the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) strong electoral victory on 3 May.
Speaking after a congratulatory phone call with Wong on Monday, Anwar said he looked forward to closer collaboration between the two neighbouring countries.
“The PAP’s strong mandate, winning 87 out of 97 seats, reflects the high confidence and trust placed by Singaporeans in Wong’s leadership,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
He added that Malaysia was eager to work with Wong’s administration to further strengthen longstanding bilateral ties, which he said were rooted in a shared history, strong economic cooperation, and enduring people-to-people links.
Wong, who has officially taken office as Singapore’s Prime Minister, also received congratulatory calls from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
“They congratulated me on the outcome of the elections, and we had good discussions on regional developments and bilateral cooperation. I look forward to catching up with them in person before too long,” Wong said on social media.
Wong, who is also the secretary-general of the PAP, led the party to a landslide victory, securing 87 out of 97 seats in Parliament. The party not only retained its supermajority but also increased its share of the popular vote to 65.57 per cent, up from 61.24 per cent in the 2020 general election. - May 6, 2025
