PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed optimism that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) can forge a broader alliance to ensure political stability in Sabah and strengthen ties with Putrajaya.
Anwar confirmed that discussions had already begun with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to explore a more inclusive cooperation framework ahead of the state election.
“Our decisions start with PH Sabah, and of course, we are already working with UMNO-BN and GRS,” Anwar said in Tawau on Sunday.
The Prime Minister is on a one-day working visit to the Sabah east coast district.
He stressed that his visit to meet Hajiji was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen alignment between the three blocs, describing the talks as “positive” and “open”.
“That’s why I came here—to ensure this cooperation is broader and more inclusive,” he added.
Addressing speculation of mixed signals on the alliance, Anwar clarified that while earlier announcements had focused on PH and BN, the ongoing dialogue now includes GRS.
“For us, the priority is political stability at both the state and national levels,” Anwar emphasised, adding that this was key to delivering long-term benefits to the people of Sabah.
GRS had recently indicated it might contest alone after PH and BN finalised their partnership without them.
GRS and BN are political rivals in Sabah.
However, Anwar made it clear that collaboration between the three political powers is his preferred outcome.
“I am optimistic. because I see positive attitudes from all sides, including Hajiji and BN leaders.”
He said final decisions would ultimately be left to Sabah’s leadership, but assured that PH remained committed to finding common ground.
“Our willingness to continue discussions reflects our commitment to Sabah’s future,” he said. - May 11, 2025
