THE Selangor state government may step in to mediate ongoing insurance disputes faced by victims of the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire, according to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Speaking at a press conference following the handover ceremony of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Projects A and C, Amirudin said the matter would be discussed during the state disaster unit meeting this evening.

“The state government could possibly act as a mediator, since this concerns agreements between two parties — insurance companies and policyholders. The state is ready to assist,” he said.

He added that the meeting would also address cases where affected residents have yet to receive temporary housing support, often due to incomplete documentation.

On 1 April, a major fire broke out following a gas leak in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, causing widespread property damage. Over a month later, many residents are still struggling to obtain insurance payouts.

Several media outlets have reported growing frustration among victims over slow claims processes. Some have expressed concern that insurance assessments do not reflect the extent of the damage suffered.

Lau Cheng Chew, secretary of the Topaz Putra Heights Residents Association, said residents were disheartened by the low compensation offered, despite their homes and vehicles being exposed to intense heat for nearly eight hours.

The state government’s intervention could help expedite the resolution of claims and ensure fair treatment for affected residents. - May 13, 2025
