A YOUNG couple pleaded not guilty at the Alor Gajah Sessions Court today to charges of child neglect resulting in serious injuries to their two-month-old baby earlier this month.
Nur Khairunnisa Jusni and Muhamad Nor Azmi Abdullah, both aged 22, stand accused of exposing their infant to conditions likely to cause harm to his head and body. The alleged offence occurred between 2 and 5 May at a residence on Jalan Seri Pelangi 4, Taman Seri Pelangi, in Alor Gajah.
They have been charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read in conjunction with Section 34 of the Penal Code. If convicted, they could face a fine of up to RM50,000, a prison term of up to 20 years, or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Ali Hussain argued against bail, citing the grave nature of the case, though ultimately left the matter to the court’s discretion.
Bernama cited Defence counsel Mohammed Hissham Ramdzan had appealed for a reduced bail sum, highlighting that the couple faced joint charges and were financially constrained, with Muhamad Nor recently employed and Nur Khairunnisa having just completed her postnatal confinement.
Judge Aiza Khairuddin granted bail of RM10,000 each, with several conditions attached: both must surrender their passports, report monthly to the nearest police station, and are barred from contacting any witnesses involved in the case.
The court fixed 12 June for the next mention, allowing time for document submission.
The baby was first taken to Alor Gajah Hospital by his mother before being referred to Melaka Hospital, where medical staff raised suspicions of abuse. A CT scan and further examination revealed both recent and older injuries to the child’s head, along with bruising and cuts to his body and neck. - May 13, 2025
