THE body of Abed Mifzal Azman, 22, a first-year student in Islamic Finance at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), was recovered approximately one kilometre from the site where he was last seen. The discovery was made by local villagers at around 9.30pm, with the victim’s body found lodged between rocks.

According to Mohd Sarizan Mohammad Sapawi, Chief of the Setiu Fire and Rescue Station, the operation to retrieve the body required about 15 minutes using specialised stretchers due to the challenging terrain.

“Rescuers used a special stretcher to lift the body from a ledge roughly 2.5 metres high,” he said. “The body was then handed over to the police for further action.”

District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Zain Mat Dris added that recent weather patterns had rendered Lata Payung unsafe for recreational use due to the risk of flash floods, also known locally as ‘kepala air’.

“We advise the public to refrain from engaging in any river or waterfall activities in the Setiu area for the time being, as such conditions pose a serious threat to safety,” he said. - May 17, 2025
