THE Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has advanced its ASEAN Space Economy initiative with the successful convening of the Space Conference 2025, themed “Space Economy Revolution: Trends, Technologies and Strategies.”
Held in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA’25), the conference marks a key milestone in what MOSTI describes as a “moonshot” effort to position space as a strategic new driver of the national and regional economy.
“This initiative is expected to spur growth across diverse sectors, including education, agriculture, communications, transportation and services,” said Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan, MOSTI’s Deputy Secretary-General (Technology Development), in a statement.
He added that Malaysia is committed to transitioning “from being a user of space technology to becoming a developer and provider,” with regional and international cooperation deemed essential to this evolution.
The event brought together 150 delegates, including senior officials from Southeast Asian space agencies, industry leaders, academic experts, and representatives from international organisations and government ministries.
The conference focused on five strategic themes: the Emerging Global Space Economy, Strategic Policies and Global Cooperation, Talent and Workforce Development, Emerging Trends in the Space Economy, and Game-Changing Space Technologies.
A number of key Letters of Intent (LoIs) were exchanged at the conference, witnessed by Dr Mohd Nor Azman. These included partnerships between UZMA Berhad and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd, SpaceIn Sdn Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd, Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and MYSA and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd.
Bernama cited, in a related statement, the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) highlighting the conference’s role as a strategic platform to address both national and international space sector challenges. It also facilitated knowledge sharing on sectoral priorities and collaborative strategy development.
Other objectives included strengthening technical capacity and the sustainability of space-related technologies, developing measurable performance indicators for short-, medium-, and long-term targets, and reinforcing collaborative networks within the regional space ecosystem.
MOSTI, through MYSA, is currently spearheading implementation of the National Space Policy 2030 (DAN2030), which underpins Malaysia’s long-term space strategy.
MYSA’s prominent involvement in the event reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to building capacity and resilience among key stakeholders in the national space sector. - May 23, 2025
