POLICE will implement crowd control measures and deploy officers at the upcoming 'Himpunan Melayu Berdaulat' rally set to take place in central Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed in a statement on Friday that organisers had indicated their intent to proceed with the gathering.
“As a result, we will deploy officers to ensure a reasonable level of control at the location of the rally,” he said. A total of 80 officers and personnel will be assigned to monitor the event and maintain public order in the vicinity.
When asked whether official permission had been granted for the rally, Sulizmie noted that the police had taken due notice of the planned assembly.
The 'Himpunan Melayu Berdaulat' (Sovereign Malays Assembly) is being organised by a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and is understood to be focused on voicing concerns over Malay and Muslim interests.
Among the issues highlighted are opposition to the proposed Urban Redevelopment Bill and matters involving Malay Reserve Land.
Earlier reports indicated that discussions had been ongoing between police and organisers, including considerations for alternative venues to ensure public safety.
