A TOTAL RM20 million from sukuk funds for highway construction is believed to have been misappropriated and may have been used for gambling activities, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
He said the matter was detected in the latest MACC investigation involving a prominent figure with the title Tan Sri, with several investments also identified as possibly leading to illegal activities.
According to Azam, his party is also tracing assets believed to have been obtained through misappropriation of sukuk funds, including those located abroad.
"So far, 45 witnesses have been called and we are still waiting to record the statement of the Tan Sri who is currently understood to be being treated at a private hospital," he told Berita Harian, today.
It was earlier reported that a team of MACC investigating officers found a storage room of various luxury brands of liquor during a raid on the residence of the Tan Sri.
The raid was part of an investigation into a case of false claims and misuse of loan bond funds for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley.
It is understood that the liquor storage room or 'chiller' was specially built on the ground floor of the luxury residence and was also equipped with an exclusive alcohol bar.
Sources said that the raid also involved six luxury residences and a plot of land, which in total is estimated to be worth about RM12 million.
MACC also found several horses worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit which were believed to have been purchased using funds from sukuk misappropriation. – June 2, 2025
