MALAYSIA’S elite police special forces unit, Unit Tindakan Khas (UTK), continues to see strong demand for its expertise in high-risk operations and close protection assignments, both locally and abroad, according to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
Deputy Director of the Internal Security and Public Order Department (Operations), Deputy Commissioner M V Srikumar Madhavan Nair, said the unit is regarded as one of the most sought-after forces in the country.
“UTK is not only maintaining its combat readiness, but is also evolving to meet the demands of modern security threats,” Sinar Harian cited him saying during a press conference at the UTK Beret Award and Close Protection Basic Course 1/2025 Closing Ceremony at Bukit Aman on Thursday.
He noted that UTK operatives are regarded as highly valuable assets due to their involvement in covert, high-risk missions.
“The UTK roster is never at full capacity because the demand for these operatives is extremely high — from both corporate agencies and VIPs at home and abroad who recognise their training and capabilities,” Srikumar said.
Although UTK currently has a strength of 365 personnel, he confirmed there are around 40 vacancies still to be filled.
On Thursday, 36 new operatives — including one woman — completed the UTK Basic Course, comprising seven senior police officers and 29 junior-ranked officers.
Srikumar revealed that only 15 to 18 per cent of candidates who enter UTK training manage to complete the programme.
“This reflects the intense screening process. Only the very best within the police force earn the right to become part of UTK. Even then, completing the basic course is just the beginning — they must still undergo advanced modules in explosives, sniping, parachuting and mounted patrols,” he said.
The initial training phase is designed to assess both physical and mental resilience.
“Stamina alone is not enough. They must possess unwavering fighting spirit, discipline, and strong teamwork.
“There is no room for fear or negativity in this unit,” said Srikumar, himself a former UTK officer from 1992 to 2019.
Looking ahead, he confirmed that UTK is expected to relocate to a new dedicated complex in Semenyih by next year.
“The construction is about 70 per cent complete. Once ready, all operations and training can be conducted entirely within our own facilities,” he added. - June 12, 2025
