Murder cases in Malaysia reach 476 over two years, foreign nationals most affected
There is an average of five cases per week or 21 cases per month - June 16, 2025

A TOTAL of 476 murder cases were recorded nationwide between January 2023 and the end of November 2024, according to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Bukit Aman stated that 261 cases were reported in 2023, with an average of five cases per week or 21 cases per month. From January to November 2024, a further 215 cases were reported, averaging four cases weekly or 17 monthly.

“Selangor recorded the highest number of murder cases with 115 incidents between 2023 and November last year, followed by Perak (60 cases), Johor (59), Sabah (47), and Sarawak (36),” it said.

“The high number of murder cases in Selangor is influenced by the state's vast area and high population density, as well as rapid economic development, which contributes to the influx of foreign workers,” it added.

In terms of victims, 266 individuals were killed in 2023, comprising 212 men and 54 women. From January to November 2024, 226 victims were recorded, including 87 foreign nationals.

“Analytical findings also revealed that foreign nationals constitute the highest number of murder victims compared to locals,” the department said.

On prosecutions, it added that 185 investigation papers—71 per cent of total murder cases in 2023—resulted in charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

For the January to November 2024 period, 149 investigation papers, or 69.3 per cent of total cases, were brought to court under the same provision. - June 16, 2025
