THE Kuching magistrate's court sentenced a 15-year-old boy to six years in Henry Gurney School for causing a fatal multi-vehicle crash on Jalan Teo Kui Seng (Jalan Stutong Baru) in January.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan also imposed a fine of RM1,500 on the teenager who pleaded guilty to the two charges read out against him.
For the first charge, the teenager was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing the death of five victims.
The second charge of underaged driving was under Section 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which is punishable under Section 39(5) of the same Act.
The accident that occurred on January 14, at around 1.10 pm, claimed five lives, four victims died at the scene while another died at the Sarawak General Hospital and all victims were aged between 16 and 45 years old.
A viral dashcam footage showed the car driven by the teenager losing control before crashing into several vehicles from the opposite direction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mohd Fadzri Azham Zainudin, requested that a severe sentence be imposed based on public interest factors, the increase in cases involving underage drivers and the accused's lack of remorse.
During proceedings, the Welfare Department suggested the teenager serve three years at the reform school for each charge.
The teenager was unrepresented.
On May 14, the father of the teenager was fined RM15,000 or 12 months in prison, and ordered to undergo 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to failing to properly supervise his child, under Section 33(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001. -July 17, 2025
