A CONTRACTOR and his former wife were each sentenced to 34 years in prison by the High Court in Kota Kinabalu on Friday, after being found guilty of murdering their domestic worker in 2021.

Mohammad Ambree Yunos @ Unos, 44, and Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong, 37, were convicted of the murder of 28-year-old Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, which occurred between 8 and 11 December 2021 at a condominium unit in Amber Tower, Lido Avenue, Penampang.

Ambree was also sentenced to 12 strokes of the cane, while Etiqah, a former Masterchef Malaysia finalist, was exempt from caning in accordance with provisions relating to gender.

“The court finds both accused guilty as charged,” said High Court Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng, who ordered that the prison terms commence from the date of conviction – Friday. The pair had been out on bail prior to sentencing.

The duo were jointly charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. - June 20, 2025
