Dzulkifli Ahmad condemns student protest act, urges Malaysians to fight corruption with honour, not hostility - June 24, 2025

THE burning of a caricature resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a recent student-led anti-corruption rally in Sabah has been denounced as excessive and unbecoming of a mature democracy.

Former Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad, criticised the act, describing it as “extremist” and disrespectful.

“This should never have been done, regardless of the reason,” Dzulkifli said in a statement on Monday. “The fight against corruption should inspire reflection and awareness, not be tarnished by actions that undermine the very values of the cause.”

He expressed disappointment over what he viewed as a lack of respect towards national leaders, stressing the importance of dignity in public discourse.

“As Malaysians who believe in justice and clean governance, we must oppose wrongdoing, but do so in a manner that is honourable and civilised,” he said.

Dzulkifli warned that such extreme behaviour risks discrediting legitimate struggles and could give the authorities justification to silence lawful dissent.

He acknowledged widespread public frustration—particularly among youth—over the perceived lack of transparency and firmness in handling high-profile corruption cases, including those involving political figures in Sabah.

“The people’s discontent, especially young Malaysians, with anti-corruption rhetoric that lacks concrete action and transparency from institutions is valid and must be understood,” he said.

“But what we need is systemic reform, not mere street spectacle. Ignite the spirit of the people to fight corruption, not caricatures of leaders,” he added. - June 24, 2025
