POLICE have successfully dismantled a cell linked to the so-called Gerakan Militan Radikal Bangladesh (GMRB), a group accused of spreading extremist ideology among Bangladeshi nationals in the country.

Deputy Director of Special Branch I at Bukit Aman, Datuk Ahmad Ramdzan Daud, confirmed that all 36 individuals believed to be involved have been apprehended following an integrated operation launched in April.

He said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is now shifting its focus to potential new threats, both local and foreign.

“For now, I can say that for Bangladesh, it is over. But others have yet to be discovered — that will be detailed later. It could involve Malaysia, other countries, or even locals,” he told reporters after officiating the 78th Series 5/2025 Basic Police Training Program (PLAK) graduation parade at the Sabah Police Headquarters in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday.

Ramdzan also highlighted the growing challenge posed by social media platforms, which he said were commonly used as recruitment tools by the militant group.

“We really need technology to detect elements of introduction or recruitment used by these Bangladeshi militants, which are mostly done through social media,” he said.

He cautioned that investigations are ongoing and declined to elaborate further, citing operational sensitivity.

“Whatever it is, the matter is under investigation, so it is difficult for me to discuss further,” he added. - July 5, 2025
