TWO Chinese nationals were killed and a Malaysian driver injured in a fatal road accident along the North-South Expressway northbound near Tapah on Monday night.
Tapah police chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said the accident occurred at KM316.9 at approximately 10.30pm. The victims, Chong Hong and Yucheng Pan, both aged 41, were pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, 56-year-old Lau Yong Kheng, sustained injuries to his neck, legs and arms.
“Initial investigations indicate the Toyota Vios, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang in the right lane, attempted to avoid a lorry that suddenly changed lanes in front of it. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently skidded,” said Johari in a statement issued on Tuesday.
He added that efforts are underway to identify the lorry involved and gather dashboard camera footage to assist in the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Meanwhile, Assistant Director (Operations) of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, confirmed the department received an emergency call at 8.53pm. A response team from the Tapah Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Rescue personnel found the victims trapped inside the vehicle. Specialised equipment was used to extricate them before they were handed over to the Ministry of Health and police for further action,” he said.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Tapah Hospital for post-mortem examinations. - July 15, 2025
