A YOUNG shop assistant was charged in the Alor Gajah Magistrates’ Court today with the murder of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old daughter, who died under suspicious circumstances at a shop premises two weeks ago.

Muhammad Isyraf Hifhzan Abdullah, 20, appeared before Magistrate Dr Teoh Shu Yee and nodded to indicate he understood the charge, which was read out by the court interpreter. No plea was recorded, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

He is accused of killing Bunga Eleena Iman Rozaien on the third floor of a shoplot in Bandar Satelit Pulau Sebang around 9pm on 6 July.

The charge was brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Fiqri Hakim Zamri told the court that bail was not being offered and requested a new date pending the post-mortem report.

The court denied bail and fixed 23 September for mention. The accused was not represented by a lawyer.

According to earlier reports, the toddler was allegedly abused by her mother and the accused before being brought unconscious to Hospital Tampin. Medical personnel detected both internal and external injuries, and she was pronounced dead shortly after. - July 18, 2025
